I am currently in my 30th year of teaching English on the high school level. In 2007, my wife and I and three children moved from Costa Rica where I had been teaching for three years to Beaufort. I have been teaching English at BHS since then.

I encourage my students to develop a sense of intellectual curiosity. While answers are necessary sometimes, I tend to place more emphasis on the questions themselves while encouraging students to arrive at solutions they can support with well thought-out responses.  Needless to say, students will be encouraged to practice their critical thinking skills will in this class.

I have many heroes in my life--alive, deceased, famous, obscure. One of those heroes is Henry David Thoreau who moved to Walden Pond in Concord, MA in 1845 to begin his experiment on how to live a more simple life. The following words are his:

I went to the woods because I wished to
live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

My students will hear me talk about the concept of living deliberately throughout their time in my class.  I discourage them from simply going through the motions of the school day. I encourage them to think critically about what they read and write and experience and to ask themselves if what they have read, written, and witnessed truly makes sense. To live deliberately requires much thought. This class will give students the skills they need to better express their thoughts in writing and speaking.

I look forward to the new semester ahead!
